Why BuildRoyale.io Will Not Load on This Site, and Where to Play the Real One

Published · 2 min read

What happened when we embedded it

Setting this site up, the obvious plan was to frame buildroyale.io on the home page: it sends no header that forbids framing and it runs fine inside a frame on a neutral page. Then we tested it from buildroyale.org itself and the frame went black. The reason is in the game's own script: it walks location.ancestorOrigins, and if any parent page's origin contains one of about seven listed domains it sends itself to a redirect page on the developer's server. buildroyale.org is on that list, alongside build-royale.com, buildroyale.online and a few others. The developer wrote that check on purpose, so we are not going to strip it out, proxy the game or mirror its files. The original lives at buildroyale.io, it is free, and that is where to play it.

What BuildRoyale.io is

Mathew Matakovic released it in 2019 as a top-down answer to Fortnite. You parachute onto a cartoon island with a pickaxe and a small stack of wood, brick and metal, harvest more by whacking trees, rocks and cars, and press Q to switch into build mode, where walls, ramps and floors go down instantly and can be edited into doors and windows. Guns come in rarity colours, shields sit on top of health, and Solo, Duos and Squad queues fill from a lobby that usually shows a few dozen builders online. There is a battle pass, party codes for friends and a shop for skins, gliders, pickaxes and emotes. The lobby also shows exactly why people keep playing it: the last two players in a match are usually both mid-air on ramps they built two seconds earlier.

What we play here instead

ZombsRoyale.io, on the home page, is the closest game that welcomes embedding. It is the same top-down cartoon royale with a hundred players, loot rarities, shields, grenades and a closing gas, minus the building. If building is the reason you came, follow the link above; if you wanted a quick browser royale, the one on the home page is live right now.
